Ask experienced players and table mechanics whether Artemis or Brunswick SuperSpeed cushions are better and you will get strong opinions in both directions. The debate often sounds like a simple brand comparison: one rubber is faster, one banks shorter, one lasts longer.
But the most useful lesson from years of AZBilliards mechanic discussions is that the cushion brand cannot be separated from the rail geometry underneath it. Cushion profile, subrail angle, subrail width, cushion nose height, cloth and installation all interact.
Why This Debate Gets Confusing
Players experience a finished rail, not a loose piece of rubber. If two tables use different subrails, different cushion profiles and different nose heights, comparing only the rubber brand can lead to the wrong conclusion.
For example, AZB mechanics have repeatedly discussed older Gold Crowns, later Gold Crowns, older Diamond rail geometry and newer Diamond designs. In those conversations, experienced installers emphasize that changing rubber without recalibrating the supporting subrail can change the playing dimensions and bank behavior.
What Is Cushion Profile?
Pool-table cushions are manufactured in profiles such as K55 and K66. The profile describes the shape and dimensions of the rubber. Two cushions may both be high-quality natural rubber yet fit a given rail very differently.
A profile that is physically wider or shaped differently can move the cushion nose inward or outward if the wooden subrail is not designed for it. That can alter the effective playing area and the geometry the ball sees at impact.
Artemis Intercontinental and SuperSpeed
Artemis Intercontinental cushions and Brunswick SuperSpeed cushions are both widely respected, but they are not universal drop-in replacements for every historical rail design.
Mechanics on AZBilliards have pointed out that even where two cushions are described within the same general profile family, differences in actual dimensions and the subrail they are mounted to can matter. Older tables may require subrail calibration rather than simply gluing on a new cushion and calling the job complete.
Subrail Geometry Can Change Bank Behavior
The subrail is the wooden structure behind the rubber. Its bevel angle and dimensions determine the cushion's final position and orientation.
This is crucial because a ball does not rebound from a brand name; it rebounds from a cushion nose positioned at a particular height and angle. Change that relationship and the bank response can change even if the rubber itself is excellent.
One long-running AZB discussion about why some Diamond tables banked differently than Brunswicks focused not only on cushion type but also on changes to Diamond's subrail geometry. That is exactly why isolating rubber brand from the rest of the rail can be misleading.
Cushion Nose Height Matters
The height of the cushion nose above the playing surface affects the way the ball contacts the rail. Too high or too low can alter rebound behavior and can contribute to unusual hopping or inconsistent banks.
Correct nose height depends on the ball diameter, cushion profile and rail design. A high-end cushion installed at the wrong height is still a bad rail.
Why Some Tables Bank “Short” or “Long”
Players describe a bank as short when the rebound angle closes more than expected and long when it opens more. Cushion elasticity contributes, but so do cloth friction, speed, spin, temperature, humidity and rail geometry.
This is why two players can have different experiences with the same cushion brand on two different tables. The complete rail system is different.
Does Rubber Quality Still Matter?
Absolutely. Consistency, manufacturing quality, elasticity and aging characteristics all matter. The point is not that Artemis and SuperSpeed are interchangeable. The point is that a premium rubber can only perform correctly when matched to the rail.

What Should a Buyer or Restorer Ask?
- Which cushion profile was this rail originally designed around?
- Has the subrail been recalibrated for the replacement cushion?
- What is the final cushion nose height?
- Will the replacement preserve the intended playing dimensions?
- Has the installer worked with this table model before?
Those questions are more meaningful than asking which logo is molded into the rubber.
The Bottom Line
Artemis vs. SuperSpeed is a real comparison, but the best answer is rarely “Brand A always plays better.” A pool-table rail is an engineered assembly. Cushion profile, subrail width, bevel, nose height, cloth and installation determine the final rebound.
If the geometry is wrong, changing cushion brands may simply trade one problem for another. If the geometry is correct, both premium cushion systems can deliver excellent, predictable play.
