Pool-table specifications often make slate thickness sound like a simple hierarchy: if 1 inch is good, 30mm must be better, and 2 inches must be exceptional. In reality, the relationship between slate thickness and playability is more complicated.
AZBilliards has hosted this debate for years. Mechanics and players generally agree that thicker slate adds mass and rigidity, but they disagree about how much that changes actual ball travel, rebound, sound and feel. The safest conclusion is that thickness matters—but not in isolation.
Why One-Inch Slate Became a Common Reference Point
Approximately 1-inch slate is common on serious pool tables because it provides substantial rigidity and mass without making handling unnecessarily extreme. When correctly supported, machined and leveled, it can provide a stable professional-quality playing bed.
That does not mean every 1-inch table is equal. Frame construction, span between supports, leveling system and installation still determine whether the slate remains in a true plane.
What Is 30mm Slate?
30mm slate is about 1.18 inches thick, noticeably thicker than a nominal 1-inch slab. Some tournament and commercial table designs use this extra thickness to increase rigidity and mass.
In AZB discussions involving Diamond tables, the move to roughly 30mm slate has been described as a balance: more rigidity than conventional 1-inch material without going to the extreme mass and behavior associated with very thick antique or specialty slate.
What Does Extra Thickness Actually Do?
The clearest physical effect is greater rigidity and mass. A thicker stone slab generally resists flexing more than a thinner slab of the same material and span. That can make leveling more stable and reduce sensitivity to support irregularities.
It can also change the acoustic character of the table. Players often describe thick-slate tables as sounding denser or more substantial. That subjective “solid” feel is real to many players even when measured ball-roll differences are difficult to isolate.
Does Thicker Slate Make Balls Roll Farther?
This is one of the disputed points. Some mechanics argue that a heavier, more rigid slate bed absorbs less energy through vibration and can therefore allow slightly longer ball travel. Others argue that once the slate is sufficiently rigid and supported, cloth, cleanliness, humidity, ball condition and shot speed matter far more.
That is why claims such as “30mm slate is automatically faster” should be treated cautiously. Table speed is primarily experienced through the complete surface system, especially the cloth.
What About Two-Inch Slate?
Some vintage and specialty tables have used slate around 1.5 to 2 inches thick. These tables can feel exceptionally massive and stable, but more is not automatically better.
AZB discussions include reports that very thick slate can produce different bounce characteristics, particularly on jump shots or balls driven into the bed. Diamond representatives discussing earlier testing said they experimented with slate thicker than 30mm and preferred 30mm as a practical balance rather than simply choosing the thickest available option.
That is an important design lesson: engineering is about optimization, not maximizing a single specification.
Slate Thickness and Frame Support Work Together
A thick slate sitting on a weak or poorly supported frame is not a premium playing system. Likewise, a properly engineered frame can make excellent use of a more conventional slate thickness.
When comparing tables, look at:
- Slate thickness and material quality
- Number and placement of slate supports
- Frame rigidity
- Leveling points and adjustment method
- Span between supports
- Installation quality
Does Thicker Slate Stay Level Better?
All else equal, additional rigidity can make a slab less prone to flex between supports. But the phrase “stays level” can be misleading because a table can move out of level for reasons unrelated to the slate itself: floor settlement, frame movement, loose hardware or poor initial setup.
Thickness helps the playing bed resist deformation; it does not eliminate the need for good structural engineering and professional leveling.
How This Differs From One-Piece vs. Three-Piece Slate
Thickness and piece count are separate questions. A three-piece slate table can use substantial slate and be precisely leveled section by section. A one-piece table can also play exceptionally well but may create major handling challenges.

So What Thickness Should a Buyer Look For?
For a premium residential table, the best answer is not “buy the thickest slate you can find.” Look for a proven combination of adequate slate thickness, a rigid support structure, accurate machining and a professional installation process.
A well-engineered 1-inch system can outperform a poorly supported thicker slab. A properly designed 30mm system can add useful rigidity and mass. Extremely thick slate may be desirable in certain designs, but it should exist for an engineering reason rather than as a marketing number.
The Bottom Line
Thicker slate can increase rigidity, mass and the solid feel of a pool table, but slate thickness is not a standalone measure of play quality. Once the bed is sufficiently rigid, the frame, leveling, cloth, cushions and installation become equally important.
Instead of asking only “How thick is the slate?”, ask the better question: How is the entire playing bed engineered and supported?
