As a discipline of carom billiards, it challenges players to perform a series of pre-defined shots, each with varying degrees of difficulty. Artistic billiards involves 76 pre-set shots, each assigned a maximum point value based on its difficulty. The scoring system ranges from four points for the simplest shots to eleven points for the most complex ones. A perfect score across all shots totals 500 points, although competitions may not always utilize the complete set of shots.

The sport is governed by the Confédération Internationale de Billard Artistique, which oversees competitions and maintains the rules. The first world championship took place in 1986, initially requiring the use of ivory balls, a requirement that was later dropped in 1990.

Shot Categories and Scoring

The shots in artistic billiards are divided into various categories, each presenting different challenges:

• Trick Shots: These shots require players to demonstrate exceptional skill and creativity.
• Fancy Shots: Focus on aesthetics and difficulty, often involving complex angles and spins.

Artistic Pool: A Related Discipline

A variant known as artistic pool emerged in the 1970s, played on pocket billiard tables. Official competitions began in 1993 under the auspices of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA). Artistic pool incorporates many elements from traditional artistic billiards but adapts them for pocket tables, featuring a different set of challenges and shot types.
